In 2006, I went to Yuanli Township in Miaoli, Taiwan for an organic rice bag design project. There, I saw many local women weaving, which brought back memories of my elders repairing bamboo dustpans, which touched my heart. After recommendations from Mr. Yeh Wen-Hui (葉文輝), I was able to learn more about traditional Taiwanese straw hat making process, which were mostly woven by the Yuanli women. To the locals, rush grass weaving is like a motherly language, and a symbol of home. Thus, my inspiration for writing this book was not to cultivate the next generation of straw hat weavers, but in hopes that more people will be able to gain exposure and interest in the art of traditional Yuanli rushcraft. Early Yuanli weavers operated as family businesses, and relied on word of mouth within the community to learn the intricate weaving techniques. Hence, the weaving methodology varied from place to place, and so did the names of their processes and techniques, which were shaped by the nuances of local community dialects. For example, in the past, majority of the locals spoke in Minnan dialect (Southern Hokkien). One of the procedures, known as 「壓一編」was as follows: take one blade of grass and press it down. The term 'press down' or 「壓」, was pronounced like "dey" in Minnan, which sounded similar to「底」in local tongue, and so, its name evolved to become「底一編」. While the term「壓一編」better reflects the special characteristics of the weaving process, most of today's younger generations don't speak Minnan dialect. Although the meanings aren't that much different, it shows the evolution of traditional rushcraft as the art gets passed down from one generation to the next, which makes documenting and preserving the history and knowledge of the weaving process an ever-more important and urgent project.

This book documents my "Setting Up" exhibition that was held in Taipei and Sweden in 2013. I sought to measure the spatial dimension with fabric, to initiate discussions on the temporality of time people can often feel through fabric.

I have often looked at fabric as a vehicle to carry around all kinds of memory. As a matter of fact, I collected photos and images ranging from past to present to construct visual and pictorial elements for my fabric work. On that basis, I applied the weaving structure to present the vehicle of memory and time where people and objects meet, and the distinctive looks of fabric in space that reflect peoples' daily experiences with it.

Documenting Rush Weavers (紀錄 · 編藺人) is a book dedicated to providing the best introduction into central Taiwan's unique rush grass weaving culture, and its century-old straw hat industry. Inside the book, you will find in-depth knowledge, instructions and analysis on the rush grass weaving techniques, craftsmanship and patterns, meticulously gathered through interviews with the craftspeople. This book attempts to present the splendors of the rapidly fading rush weaving industry, in hopes of inspiring readers to appreciate the art of rushcraft from the perspective of the weavers. This book includes reference materials, historical data and explanatory notes that allow readers to follow the author's footsteps to explore the rushcraft industry’s evolution, and the ecology and technical analysis of rush grass. It contains 9 chapters and 157 pages, leveraging modern digitalization technologies to record and preserve information, so that precious first-hand knowledge, and visual-textual materials on the weaving industry can reach a wider audience.
